Welcome, ACA!
As of late, we've all noticed a dramatic increase of scams within the community - not just here on ACA, but almost anywhere you go to trade items, villagers, or other goods within New Horizons. It's been no different on ACA of course, as many of you might already be aware of. Whenever we get scam or theft reports we deal with the user accordingly as per our Guidelines, but we feel bad not being able to reimburse anyone. In the past, many people had the abilities to spawn items and villagers into their New Leaf towns, and many of us on the Admin team had access to such abilities which was how we offered to reimburse back then, however since New Horizons is, well, new, we do not have access to the same things in this game as of right now.
Which is why we've come to you for help!
Our community is almost at 100,000 members, and while not every single person in that count is active every day, we still have quite a lot here. Plenty of you have New Horizons and have been building your island up from day one, and you've probably acquired quite the catalog already... right? 🤔
Essentially what this service will be is ACA members helping other ACA members - we'll have lists of items or villagers people on ACA have been scammed out of in some way, and we're handing them off to the whole community in hopes of reimbursing something, even just one or two items, for these people. If not items, maybe you guys can scrounge up some Nook Miles Tickets or Amino Coins that the user might've paid the scammer for instead if the item or villager isn't offered up by someone!
It won't just be everyone else though, don't worry, Admins will be helping too if we happen to have the things people are asking for!
We've obviously never done anything like this before, so we want your honest opinions on this. We don't know how it'll go or if it'll work out well, or even if anyone will help at all. We really want it to work though; we hate having to turn people away without being able to offer some sort of reimbursement.

What we already have in mind

We've been brainstorming ideas for this service for a bit now, but aren't completely set on what we have. Before you send us any feedback, please read below for what we have in mind for how we'll make this work.

We'll have a wiki and a chatroom, and both will be easily accessible to everyone.
⋄ The wiki will be made into a page on the home page layout, much like the Featured Feed, General Chat, Guideline wiki, etc. The wiki will have information on what the service is and how you can contribute, as well as a link to the chatroom.
⋄ The chatroom will have lists in the description of items, villagers, NMTs, Bells, etc. that have been stolen or scammed from someone in our community. These will not have usernames or links to the people that have been scammed or the scammers/thieves.
⋄ General discussion will not be allowed in the chatroom and it'll solely be for offering items, villagers, etc.

We do have a concern with this service though: more scams or theft. To avoid this, we have a few ideas:
⋄ An Admin will be there during the transaction to ensure all goes well. Our only concern with doing this is that we don't all have the time to be doing these transactions, and not all of us even have the game. Alternatively, we could also have people drop off their offers to an Admin's town whenever both parties are available, then at a later time the user who was scammed would come to the Admin's island to pick up their items. If the user is looking for a villager reimbursement though, we would have to be there during the transaction of course.
⋄ We create a team of trusted members who can do the aforementioned tasks so everything isn't put on our shoulders - again, a big concern is not all of us being available to do these transactions, so having a small, verified team would be extremely helpful. We are not sure how we would promote these people though.
⋄ We ask the person offering items to send proof images of each offered item, as well as some sort of barricade at their airport to avoid the other person running off and possibly stealing something, thus creating a new theft case.

The people's items we will list in the chatroom description will be victims of theft or scam only from other members on ACA, and only ones that have been confirmed by Administration to ensure false scams aren't advertised. Reports of scams will not be tolerated in the chat or the wiki comments and must still be reported privately to a Curator or Leader.

I think this is a good idea and I would be willing to help, but there is a few things:
People could fake being scammed to earn free items, and if people aren’t taking screenshots there’s not any proof.
you’d have to pay attention to everything they say, and they should have to have the profile of the scammer. this would probably work out because if they faked a scam with their friend their friend would get banned, and I don’t think they would be willing to get banned to earn some NMTs. thanks:)
ahh this concern has come up a lot already in previous comments where ive replied and mentioned we have certain precautions taken to ensure the scams are in fact real and not faked, these won't be any different :ok_hand: 🏻 thank you for the concern though!
Hey! Actually with the spawning in of items there have been break throughs over on discord on hacking the games, im not sure how it works but it could be something to look into ^^ ive seen lots of cases of people receiving raymond and other villagers for free through these people.
thank you, maybe we'll look into that! personally though, i don't think id be willing to hack my switch just yet; i haven't looked into hacking much for the switch yet but i do assume it would have similar repercussions to the 3ds, such as bricking :'0 not only this, but as a previous hacker for new leaf speaking from experience, i don't think id have much interest in the game if i was able to spawn items/villagers in freely, and it's a bit difficult trying to go back to not having that ability and trying to complete your town/island "hack-free" when it's sitting right there tempting you 👁 of course, this is just my personal opinion on hacking the switch/nh, but i believe it's a popular opinion held by some of the other admins as well as a lot of members in our community, which is why we decided to establish something basically everyone could help out with!

Just some quick things:
Please make sure that you are paying attention to their story, proof, and behavior, because people can fake this just to get free stuff. (Be extra careful if someone is asking for unreasonably high amounts of items with a weak story)
Also, if you could ask for people to give any profiles of the scammer to help prevent future scammings would be awesome (especially the name and island of the person).
If they are unable to remember the name and island of the scammer, suggest them to talk to their villagers (if someone visits they will talk about them).

rain mentioned this in a previous comment reply and i also just added one to a comment a couple below yours, but we do/will have requirements for people claiming to have been scammed or stolen from! we take action accordingly based on the proof given and keep track of said scammers/thieves on our own privately and unfortunately would not be sharing said information with the public to avoid other members attacking or harassing them, but do know we take care of each case properly! thank you for the feedback nonetheless!

I don't really understand how someone can get scammed in a video game but I think this is a good idea

Feel fortunate it hasn’t happened to you yet. The most common one I’ve seen is with turnips. People usually like to say “3 Nook miles tickets for you to sell your turnips on my island”. You get there, give them your tickets and they kick you out. Very sickening.

Which is the smart thing to do but when you’re forced to trade with strangers, for the progress of your island, scams can take place.
