I don't understand shading and reflections

So... I basically wanted to try @Miesmud's art style because their art is really good and their shading and reflection effects are stunning. But, oh boy was I in for a treat

the face was self explanatory, just basic soft-shading around edges and the nose

BUT THEN THE TENTACLES HAD TO BE DONE.

My tiny brain couldn't handle the amount of shading the tentacles had (NOT TO MENTION I WAS FOLLOWING THEIR TUTORIAL ON YOUTUBE) and I didn't even understand the layer effects you can have because I usually just draw effects with the normal setting.

but long story short, I finished it and I realized I have school tomorrow and I'm having a crisis as I'm typing this.

So if Miesmud is magically reading this... kudos to you for having a good art style

Also I spent so much time on the tentacles I forgot to take progress shots so you're gonna have to take my word for it
